Woodworking: Some History, Evolution, As a Hobby, and For-profit
By: Pacific Redwood Sign Company

History and Evolution

The idea that wood can be manipulated was a major stepping stone for primitive people. The birth of our civilization came from communities that directly engaged nature. These communities did not have luxuries such as markets and local stores, so they had to provide for themselves. This meant hunting. The need for sustenance is why some of the first tools in our archeological record are stone tools made to carve and manipulate wood (i.e. for woodworking). Items such as wood spears, boats, bows, and other hunting elements were essential for people to live. They played a major part in our advancement and freed time for other activities such as art. Along with our progression, woodworking has evolved where its purposes and products have change to suit the modern wood using world.

Modern Woodworking

Wood is still an essential part or our society. For example, the housing market is vastly dependent on wood production. But that is wood commercialized and it is different from woodworking as a craft. The craft has become more of a hobby and small time business venture than a living essential. It is a wonderful art and provides much joy for those who partake in the production process and for those who seek the products of the woodworking masters. Woodworking is a rewarding hobby and art. It will always be in our society for there is something about its look that strikes the sense of warmth and makes us feel relaxed and comfortable.

As a Hobby

Woodworking is a great way for hard working individuals to escape annoyances and stress. It also allows room for creativity and rewards with accomplishment. It is rewarding to see finished products. Many of these products are common things you may find around any house. From furniture to toys, wood pervades all aspects or our lives. Some of these items are small and useful such as a wood bowl that may be completed in one evening. Another creation may be a full height piece of furniture such as an armoire. This project will take longer to complete. For big and small projects the enjoyment and pride of completion is considerable and a great reason to start the craft of woodworking.

Chances are you are just starting out as a woodworker so you might want to consider looking for help. One of the best routes to finding help is looking for other skilled craftspeople. The woodworking community is an open network and our people love to share information. Ask for tips and tricks. Everyone has their own technique but there are many commonalties out there. Knowing these tips and tricks will save you a lot of time. Besides other craftspeople there are a number of woodworking magazines, books, videos, and online resources (read our woodworking tips below) to guide you on your woodworking journey.

For-profit

Skilled craftspeople can turn their creations into profit. The process of becoming a master woodworker takes many years of practice. It also requires an artistic eye because this craft is about individuality and shines away from mechanized works such as factory produced chairs and tables. If you do have the skill, consider selling some of your products at local swap meets and markets. If people like what they see consider expanding and someday you might strike it big.
