Basic Wood Carving by Hand - Part 1

Tips for the Beginner Wood Carver
By: Pacific Redwood Sign Company

The following article is an introduction to basic wood carving and offers tips for beginners:

Wood carving is both a hobby and an art. Carving is a hobby because anyone can take a shot at it; however, it is an art because it takes an individual who will be thoroughly involved in the process. Creating a wood carving is a deeply involved and rewarding journey. The finished wood carvings are much more than decadent ornaments because they symbolize individuality and expression over materialism and factory production. Here are some things to keep in mind:

The basics steps in wood carving are selecting your design, materials, and tools. Make a blueprint of your design. Apply this design to your materials by utilizing your wood carving techniques. Since you are just starting out you will need to seek assistance with techniques.

Finding help will expedite your learningThe fastest route to becoming a master at wood carving is finding someone that can take you on as an apprentice. Search for a local artisan or carving class. As a beginner it is a good idea to learn form someone who knows what they are doing since you probably don’t yet. If you are on a budget consider researching more tutorials online. But it might be a good idea to use a person as a resource because you will have questions and they will know the answers for they were once in your shoes.

Asking questions is a good thing. There is absolutely no shame in wanting to learn something, and experienced wood carvers will have useful tips or instruction for you. Before you can develop your personal carving style you need to learn the basics, so joining some classes or having a tutor may just be one of the best approaches for you to learn.

Take your time. You have probably heard patience is a virtue and this holds true for wood carving. Don’t rush! It is a good idea to take your time. This is a hobby and not a job, so relax and enjoy yourself. Don’t ignore creativity because you feel the need to rush. Work smart by carving 30 to 45 minuets per session. Your hands might get cramps unless you are trained to do this.  Make this art enjoyable by taking sufficient breaks and continue when you want. Valuable results are achieved in time, not in one afternoon, so take your time.

Analyzing your creations will improve carving techniques. Try comparing your carvings with those of professionals and amateurs. Do this in a non-competitive fashion; adopt ideas and perspectives noticed in other wood carvings and transfer them to your own style. Sometimes the best way to learn is by mimicry. Keep what you like and ignore what doesn’t work for you.

Maintaining Safety is the most important step. Safety is often overlooked but it is also one of the most important parts of wood carving. Since you want your carving days to last, some of the following tips are a great start for a safe experience. The most dangerous part of wood carving is using the knife. When using this knife make sure to cut away from your body and that your hands are out of the way. You might consider thumb guards. You should also use eye protection guarding yourself from wood chips. Always carve on a steady surface and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Moreover, use common sense and listen to your instinct.

I hope this article was informative and enjoyable. Good luck with your carving experience and don’t forget safety.
